Flat Stanley Explores "Our Growing World"!
First grade students are participating in a learning expedition titled "Our Growing World" in which they focus on beginning geography and map skills. They began by reading the story Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown in which the character is flattened and sent in the mail.

Students then took digital photographs of each other. The heads of the photographs were added to a graphic body and printed so that each student would have a "Flat Self" to send in the mail.

The kids each brought an envelope from home addressed to someone that lives in a different part of the country or a different part of the world. They then worked in the Media Center to enter information into a letter created on a word processor. The letters were printed by the students and mailed along with their "Flat Self", after adding colors to the clothing.

Letter recipients are asked to send a postcard from their city back to Lincoln School, telling about what each "Flat Self" saw in the city to which they were mailed.
The postcards and letters that come back to Lincoln School will be used to help the students learn about geography and culture in other parts of the country. The cards will be added to a classroom display containing a large map that tracks the places each "Flat First Grader" travels to.
Children will be extending their knowledge by continuing with the "Flat Stanley" series.
